Nuclear

Powering nuclear energy from today’s fuel cycle to tomorrow’s reactors. ATI materials perform where purity, reliability and decades of service matter most.
Why ATI

Built for the Nuclear Age. And the Next One.

Nuclear demands materials that perform for decades... and a supply chain built to deliver them. ATI brings deep nuclear experience, advanced materials science and U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities to fuel systems, reactor components and the next generation of nuclear technology.

From Zirconium to the Fuel Assembly

ATI is a critical supplier of zirconium materials used throughout nuclear fuel systems, from zirconium to TREX, rod, wire and strip. Our materials become fuel cladding, grids, end plugs and other components engineered to perform inside the reactor.

A Critical Western Supply

When nuclear supply chains demand reliable sources of difficult-to-produce materials, ATI is already there. Our domestic capabilities and long-standing customer relationships help strengthen the Western nuclear supply chain as energy security becomes increasingly important.

More Than One Material Answer

Different reactor technologies create radically different materials challenges. ATI brings a broad portfolio spanning zirconium, nickel-based alloys, specialty stainless steels and refractory metals - along with the melting, forging and rolling capabilities to turn them into demanding nuclear product forms.

Developing Alongside the Reactor

Tomorrow’s nuclear materials are being defined today. ATI works with reactor developers early, aligning alloy development, manufacturability, qualification and production capabilities as new designs move toward deployment.

Keeping Today’s Reactors Fueled

Fuel Cladding | Fuel Grids | End Plugs | Additional Fuel Components

Headline?

Nuclear fuel has to perform reliably through long operating cycles in one of the most demanding environments imaginable. And when a reactor shuts down to refuel, every additional day offline matters.
What’s the challenge?

Performing inside the reactor, cycle after cycle.

Nuclear fuel materials must withstand heat, radiation and corrosive environments while maintaining dimensional stability and integrity through demanding operating cycles. Extending those cycles places even greater demands on material performance.

ATI Advantage

Zirconium expertise from raw material to critical product forms.

ATI produces zirconium materials used throughout nuclear fuel assemblies. TREX is converted into thin-wall fuel cladding, strip forms grid components, and rod is machined into end plugs - putting ATI material throughout the fuel system.

New Builds & Advanced Reactors

Nickel-based Alloys | Low-cobalt Stainless Steels | Zirconium Alloys | Specialty Plate | Refractory and Reactive Metals | Melt | Forge | Roll

Headline?

As nuclear expands, ATI's opportunity expands beyond fuel into the specialized materials required throughout conventional new builds, SMRs and advanced reactor designs.
What’s the challenge?

One nuclear future. Many materials problems.

Next-generation reactors span water-, gas-, sodium- and molten-salt-cooled designs. Different temperatures, coolants and operating conditions create very different requirements for corrosion resistance, strength, chemistry and manufacturability.

ATI Advantage

A materials portfolio as diverse as the reactor landscape.

ATI brings zirconium, nickel-based alloys, specialty stainless steels and refractory materials together with advanced melting, forging and rolling capabilities. By engaging developers early, ATI can help align material selection, manufacturability and qualification as new designs move toward deployment.

Heavy-Water Reactors

Zirconium | TREX | Strip | Billet | Wire | Rod

Headline?

ATI has a longstanding position supplying zirconium materials for CANDU and other pressurized heavy-water reactors, where our products support both fuel assemblies and reactor components.
What’s the challenge?

Continuous operation requires a lot of zirconium.

Unlike conventional light-water reactors, CANDU systems use natural uranium and continuous refueling. They consume substantially more zirconium, with ATI materials serving applications ranging from fuel cladding to components designed to remain in the reactor for decades.

ATI Advantage

A leadership position built over decades.

ATI is a major zirconium supplier to the CANDU/PHWR market, producing multiple forms used across the fuel system and reactor. That established manufacturing base positions ATI to support both the existing fleet and potential new-build and refurbishment activity.
